Have you noticed? We've welcomed a new author!
Phil Stong was an American author, best known for writing the novel State Fair. His Iowa Kids series and Honk the Moose, all illustrated by Kurt Wiese, were beloved children's classics. And eNet Press is pleased to bring these wonderful books and characters to a new generation.
Stong was Iowa born and bred, and as a boy he spent many hours on his grandparent's farm where he walked, fished, did chores for his grandparents, and explored the wonders and wisdom of rural life. This intimate knowledge shines through in his stories, many of which are also rooted deep in the soil of 1920s & 30s Iowa.
His first published book, State Fair was an instant hit, and was eventually made into three movies, and a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. It tells the story of the close-knit Frake family as they explore the Iowa State Fair. Each one attends the fair with their own purpose. Abel Frake wants his boar to win the sweepstakes. His wife Melissa wants her pickles to win the blue ribbon. Their kids, Wayne & Margy want fun, challenge and adventures, and maybe a little romance. The book sees both the fair and their world through the eyes of this family.
Stong's Iowa Kids 1910 stories reveal the lives and adventures of children in rural Iowa at the beginning of the last century. Farm Boy tells the story of a city boy visiting his grandfather's farm and discovering the wonders of country life. In High Waters three boys work together to rescuea burro named Mexico from the rising river. And the third story introduces what is probably the most unusual, endearing dog ever to grace the pages of a book, No-Sitch the Hound,a one-of-a-kind dog in a one-of-a-kind story.
His charming story Honk the Moose has been an enduring children's classic since it first appeared. It tells the story of two boys, a sad moose, and eventually a whole town with both humor and understanding -- of small boys and a problem moose. Honk the Moose won distinction as a Newbery Honors Book in 1936, the Lewis Carol Shelf Award in 1970, and was listed in Cattermole's 100 Best Children's Books of the 20th Century. Based on a true story, it effectively describes the lives of Finnish immigrants in a small Minnesota town.
So check out these wonderful books, share them with the young people in your life, and stay tuned for more...
